Who doesn't love FREE fun? I sure do, and I'm excited to share with you some of the great ideas I've found for free fun in Siouxland. This post is going to exclusively share free fun in Siouxland outside of Sioux City itself, and I'll be sure to update as I find new attractions that should have a place on this list. Check out my guide to free fun in Sioux City, Iowa to find even more ideas for free Siouxland fun.
Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve is a day-use South Dakota State Park with free entrance, beautiful trails, historic buildings you can go in, farm animals to visit, and an imaginative playground. And kids love the visitors center, with tons of play space including a toy boat they can climb in, and a pioneer cabin play area with tons of toy food. My kids could spend hours there (and have!) We really are so lucky to have this in Siouxland.

Broken Kettle Grassland
Westfield, IA
Go on a self-guided hike to see a herd of 200-ish bison amidst beautiful prairie landscapes at this nature preserve run by The Nature Conservancy. I went here with my family in the 2010s on "National Bison Day" and it was really cool!
For more information, check out the Broken Kettle Grasslands Preserve website.
Fred G. Dale Planetarium at Wayne State
Wayne, NE
Enjoy spacy shows at this professor & student run planetarium in nearby Wayne, NE. Shows feature everything from Sesame Street to college level astrophysics. There's also a small natural history museum; if it's open when you're there, be sure to stop by! When we went, we saw the Sesame Street show and loved it, but the natural history museum was closed so we just peeked through the windows.
*Free will donations to the planetarium are appreciated from those able to contribute. When we went, there was a small lockbox for donations, and it was very discrete and low-pressure.

Gavin's Point National Fish Hatchery
Yankton, SD
This is a national fish hatchery which means lots of really cool fish including a rainbow trout raceway in summer. The visitors center also has information about the dam itself, a true feat of engineering!
For more information, visit the Gavins Point National Fish Hatchery website.
Lewis & Clark State Park
Onawa, IA
A star attraction at this Iowa state park is a reproduction keelboat like the one Lewis & Clark and their Corps of Discovery would have taken on their historic expedition. And inside the visitor's center, enjoy learning more about the natural area along the banks of the Missouri River.
For more information, visit the Lewis and Clark State Park page on the Iowa DNR website.
Plymouth County Historical Museum
Le Mars, IA
Learn more about the history of the city of Le Mars and Plymouth County more broadly in this museum housed in the old Central High school building (originally built in 1905!) Train lovers, don't miss the Floyd Valley Model Railroad Club exhibit!
For more information, visit the Plymouth County Historical Museum website.
Siouxland Freedom Park
South Sioux City, NE
This museum shares the experiences of heroes from Siouxland who have served in the US armed forces. Outside, reflect at the half scale replica of Washington's Vietnam War memorial and at the unique Korean War memorial. And, take your furry bff to the dog park honoring a brave pup and courageous man from Siouxland who served together overseas.

W.H. Over Museum
Vermillion, SD
The W.H. Over Museum started in 1883 as the University Museum on the campus of the University of Dakota (now University of South Dakota) and is the oldest natural history museum in South Dakota. Today the museum is independent of the University but still right on campus, and visitors can still enjoy fossils and artifacts exploring the natural history of South Dakota in the museum's excellent collection (near the Dakota Dome, so be sure to stop by if you're there for a game or meet!)
For more information, visit the W.H. Over Museum website.
Sentinels of the Prairie Windmill Collection

This quirky collection of windmills outside the garbage dump is one of the best private collections of antique windmills in the US! Head to Jackson to check out these beauties!
