When I heard that Taco John's was testing out a new menu item in just three cities and that one of them is Sioux City, I immediately wanted to try it out! So, we headed to Taco John's to try their brand new "walking taco" style dish, which they are calling the Fritos Taco Mixers. Based on that trip and trying them with my tween, here's my full review:
What is the Taco John's Frito Taco Mixer?
The Taco John's Fritos Taco Mixer is a brand-new dish available only in three test markets (Sioux City, Iowa; Paducah, Kentucky; and Evansville, Indiana) as of Mid-November 2024. The Taco Mixers come in two varieties: regular and double beef. Both options are walking-taco style entrees consisting of Fritos corn chips, ground beef, cheese, lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, and some of Taco John's iconic Potato Oles.
Our thoughts on the Taco John's Frito Taco Mixers
I ordered one of each variety of the Taco John's Fritos Taco Mixers from a Sioux City Taco John's in mid-November 2024, and I shared them with my tween son. They were $3.99 for the regular version and $4.99 for the double, plus tax. I don't know if or how these prices may change if or when the dish goes nationwide. I definitely thought that was a very reasonable price point for what you get, because I do think that either of these, especially the double beef, would be a reasonable amount of food for a meal. They also have a meal option which includes the Taco Mixers and some Potato Oles and a pop, and that sounds pretty delicious too! We ordered in the drive through and our Fritos Taco Mixers were ready very quickly.
Lettuce, tomatoes, and sour cream on top of the Taco Mixers |
In our Fritos Taco Mixers, the veggies on top were crisp and fresh, the beef was hot and flavorful, and the Potato Oles were a delight as always. The Fritos honestly were the weak link. But basically, as long as you eat it within like a half hour of getting it, they're going to be awesome. The only thing that was less than perfect in ours was that we bought them on the way to do like the school pickup run, and I ate it a bit at a time, and by the time we actually got home, and I finished it, about an hour after ordering it, some of the Fritos were not crisp anymore. I don't actually consider this a problem because you should expect that food is not made to be perfect texture an hour after you're served. But I do think it's good info to know if you're getting Taco John's before a long commute, because their tacos do travel pretty well and reheat well the next day, and I just don't think that'd be the case with the Taco Mixers.
Beef, cheese, Fritos, and Potato Oles further in |
That being said, I really, really liked these, to the point that I will probably order this next time I go to Taco John's, and my tween claimed the same. I feel like this is a great addition to the Taco John's menu, and it's different than what most other places serve. Walking tacos are so classic and familiar that I think it's almost surprising that I don't know of any other restaurants that serve them. But I think Taco John's fans will love their custom take on it (and everything is better with Potato Oles!)

I'll be very interested to see if these end up making it onto the Taco John's national menu or not. Would you try them?
