In Sauk Centre, Minnesota, I found a super coffee shop that checks a lot of boxes for things I love: delicious coffee and drinks, scratch made baked goods, a tie to literary history, and even a kids menu. I stopped by on my way home from a northwoods vacation to check it out (delicious research is my fave!), and did some additional research as well so I could share all about this spectacular coffee shop and cafe. Here's why Jitters Java Cafe needs to be on your central Minnesota bucket list.
(PS: Looking for Jitters Donuts in downtown Sioux City, Iowa? Read my full guide to Sioux City's Jitters Donuts. Honestly, this is another reason I wanted to stop here--I thought it was funny that it has almost the same name as our beloved donut shop here in Sioux City!)
Where is Jitters Java Cafe?
Jitters Java Cafe is located at 403 Main Street South in Sauk Centre, Minnesota. This is
the main street of Sinclair Lewis' iconic (and Nobel Prize winning) 1920 book
Main Street and while Jitters Java Cafe is a newer building than that, much of the original downtown remains. Just across the street from Jitters Java Cafe is an impressive historic post office, but it too is newer than
Main Street, built in 1940. Jitters Java Cafe has a small lot with free parking in front of the cafe, and there is ample free street parking on Main Street as well. Sauk Centre is on highway 71 in Minnesota, making it super convenient if you're driving from Iowa to northwoods MN destinations including the Bemidji area.
Drinks at Jitters Java Cafe
Jitters Java Cafe is best known for their coffee drinks, including hot and cold espresso-based beverages. They also have a variety of other drinks including teas, lemonades, Italian sodas, cocoa, and more. They have tons of options for syrups and to my delight, also of milks. I'm lactose intolerant, and it's almost impossible to find coffee shops or restaurants that have lactose free dairy milk. And yes, I can have almond milk or coconut milk or other alternatives, but they don't taste or feel like dairy milk, and sometimes it is fun to have my very favorite kind of milk! So, I tried a mocha turtle flavored cold coffee blender and it was spectacular. I will definitely come back anytime I'm in central Minnesota.
Food at Jitters Java Cafe
Jitters Java Cafe in Sauk Centre also has a huge food menu, and everything looked so good! I didn't stop at a mealtime, so I just got a drink, and I definitely regretted it! I am hoping to return in the future to try a full meal there. They had muffins, scones, quiche, cookies, and rhubarb bars that looked amazing for dessert.
They also have deli sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, wraps, salads, soups, and pizza. A few menu items that I especially hope to try there in the future include the strawberry chicken salad or the Reuben panini. They also have a kids menu, with macaroni, peanut butter sandwiches, and grilled cheese sandwiches.
Dining in at Jitters Java Cafe
Jitters Java Cafe has a spacious eating area, including a back room where you can be a bit further from the hustle and bustle of the ordering counter. They had large, clean bathrooms too, so I definitely recommend going in to buy a drink and a muffin to go and take a bathroom break if you're on the road going through Sauk Centre even if you don't have time to eat in the cafe. Jitters Java Cafe also has a cute outdoor seating area with tables and umbrellas, which looks like a great casual option on a day with nice weather.
