Guide to Shaughnessy's Bakery in Sibley, Iowa

Shaughnessy's Bakery in Sibley, Iowa probably isn't on your radar yet, but it totally should be! This locally-owned bakery about an hour and 15 minutes northwest of Sioux City has tasty donuts, pastries, cakes, pies and more and I'm excited to share the full details:

Where is Shaughnessy's Bakery?

Shaughnessy's Bakery is located at 346 9th Street in Sibley, Iowa next to the Max Theatres. There is street parking in front of the bakery, in front of other 9th street businesses, and just around the corner. We accidentally visited right before they had a town parade, so most of the parking was taken, but we were able to park on a side street and just had a very short walk to the bakery. Shaughnessy's and the rest of Sibley's cute main street are all just off highway 60, right on the way from Sioux City to Worthington, MN and other points north.  It's about an hour and fifteen minutes west from Sioux Falls, SD or about 45 minutes east of Okoboji, IA.

Shaughnessy's Bakery serves a great variety of yeast raised donuts including cinnamon twists, long johns, and classic glazed or frosted donuts with sprinkles

They also have donuts holes, and the day I went the flavor out was chocolate cake donuts. Shaughnessy's also sells cinnamon rolls, caramel rolls, and apple fritters, plus other breakfast pastries like Danishes. They all looked so good!

I ended up buying a box of chocolate cake donuts, a half-dozen assorted fresh donuts, plus a day-old apple fritter (they were out of fresh ones, but I really wanted to try some), and they were all so good, including the apple fritter. Their day-old fritters could seriously beat most places' fresh fritters.

My favorite donut that I personally ate from Shaughnessy's Bakery was a blueberry bismark. I love jam and jelly filled donuts, but I've never had one with blueberry inside before! The apple fritter was also really good, and my kids gobbled down the classic donuts with chocolate and maple frosting and sprinkles. Everything we tried had a really light and airy texture, which is delightful but expected in the yeasted donuts, and surprised us in the best way when we bit into the cake donuts! I'm a pretty good cook but I don't even know what they could've done to make those cake donuts so delicious! I'll definitely have to research this mystery more next visit.

My only regret with the donuts from Shaughnessy's Bakery was that I didn't order more. Next time I visit on the way north, I will plan space in the car to bring some loaves and some leftover donuts with us to the lake in Minnesota!

Cakes, Pies, and More Baked Goods at Shaughnessy's

Shaughnessy's Bakery isn't just the best donuts in the Iowa/Minnesota border area near Sibley and Worthington. They also carry homemade bread items that would be great all day long. Some of the options on the day I visited included croissants, hamburger buns, dinner rolls, and loaves of bread including wheat sandwich bread, rye bread (this would be so good in a Reuben!) and more. And it all smelled so good. I will definitely buy some of this next time I'm there. Shaughnessy's Bakery also serves delicious baked goods ideal for desserts later in the day including homemade pies, cake, and cookies.

Siouxland Fourth of July Fireworks & Fun

Fourth of July falls on a Thursday in 2024 and there is lots of patriotic fun happening. Here's where you can catch fireworks and celebrate the USA this year:

Little Chicago Deli is coming back to Sioux City!

Sioux City's newest eatery isn't actually new--it's just the newest iteration of a classic! Little Chicago Deli is opening in a new location just a couple doors down from the original restaurant, and they're opening on Friday May 31, 2024, for pickup orders and delivery, with the dining lobby opening later in summer 2024. Here's the info we have so far on Sioux City's new Little Chicago Deli: History of Little Chicago Deli Little Chicago Deli has been around Sioux City since 1988 as a locally owned sandwich shop, but unfortunately the previous location closed in 2017. Prior to that, I remember going there in college while I was doing an internship downtown, and I was sad to hear the original closed. But new owners, including some staff from the old Little Chicago Deli, are bringing it back in 2024! The name pays homage to local legends about Sioux City during Prohibition. For starters, Prohibition was widely ignored in Sioux City
