Both of my grandfathers served in the U.S. Armed Forces and I'm so grateful for the many other brave men and women who have served in the past, and to those who choose to serve in the present day. They bravely risk their own safety to preserve freedoms for the rest of us and I thank them for that (and you specifically if you are a veteran or current service member reading this!) In honor of my Grandpa and Grandad, and in honor of all who have served our country, here are five places in Siouxland that honor veterans.
Flag Park
South Sioux City, NE
This small pavilion on the Nebraska side of the Missouri River is home to 50 flags in honor of those who served in Desert Storm, one for each state in the union.
Sergeant Floyd Monument
Sioux City, IA
Though the expedition was exploratory, not a combat mission, the Corps of Discovery led by Lewis & Clark was a unit of the United States Army, and Sergeant Charles Floyd died while serving our country on that mission. The Floyd Monument was the first National Historic Landmark and participates each year in "Wreaths Across America" honoring soldiers.Siouxland Freedom Park
South Sioux City, IA
Siouxland Freedom Park honors the military with the only half scale exact replica of the Vietnam memorial wall in D.C. along with an interpretive center in progress, a Freedom Rock, and the John Douangdara Dog Park in memory of John Douangdara, a brave man from South Sioux City who worked with military dogs and died in service of our country.
You can read my full post about Siouxland Freedom Park here. (Which will be updated again after they open the interpretive center on Friday, November 10th, 2023!)
Veterans Memorial Bridge
Sioux City, IA
The Veterans Memorial Bridge opened in 1981 and connects Sioux City, Iowa to South Sioux City, Nebraska. And if you cross it, you'll be driving on the longest road in the US (Highway 20) across the longest river in the US (the Missouri.) It is named in honor of all US Veterans.Veterans Memorial Park
North Sioux City, SD
This cute little park in North Sioux City honors veterans with a small memorial wall and flags, as well as benches and landscaping to enhance the experience.
