What is the Siouxland Family Scavenger Hunt?

The Siouxland Family Scavenger Hunt is a photo scavenger hunt that will take you all over Sioux City! This Sunday, May 24th, is National Scavenger Hunt Day, so get out and get hunting!

The 2020 Siouxland Family Scavenger Hunt is also a great way to get out of the house in a social-distancing-friendly way, and to enjoy some fresh air and the sights of Sioux City with your family while you're at it!  And there are fun prizes!

In this post, you'll find all the rules and info on the prizes.  Around 8am in the morning on May 24, I will post here the official list of all the places to hunt for!

Siouxland Scavenger Hunt Rules

Around 8am on the morning of the 24th, I'll post a list of places in Sioux City for you to find. The list will show a photo of one specific Sioux City location that you have to find.

Your job will be to take pictures of them and post them -- one photo for each place you find -- to Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram with:

#SiouxlandScavengerHunt

Or you can instead post your photos in the Siouxland Family Friendly Events group if you don't have somewhere else you'd prefer to post!

Each  family or group participating in the Scavenger Hunt must choose at least one person from the group -- or one stuffed animal if you're camera-shy -- to be visible in every picture submitted.

You don't have to be touching the place in the clue -- photos from inside a car or from the closest sidewalk or parking lot are great -- but both your chosen person(s)/stuffed animal, and the place you are taking a picture of, must BOTH be visible in the picture.

Submit a separate photo for each place you find!  Each photo counts as one entry for the prizes below, as long as it's posted somewhere publicly visible on social media , using the hashtag, by 10pm Sunday night!

Each location is easily accessible and has plenty of very nearby parking, so please be safe and respectful of people and property.

Here are my big rules:

  • Be SAFE
    • Do not do anything dangerous. If there is a photo that you can't get without being dangerous, e-mail me or message me and I'll give you an extra entry in the drawing to replace it. DO NOT under any circumstances do anything that is or could be dangerous while participating in this scavenger hunt. There should be safe parking near everywhere on the list, so please find it and do not park illegally or unsafely.  DO NOT take photos from moving vehicles.
  • Be RESPECTFUL
    • Try not to get in the way of others, block places of business or people's homes, or be rude to other people. Please also be respectful of those practicing strict social distancing, even if that means you have to wait a few minutes to get where you'd like to be. Many people have health conditions that are not visible to a casual observer, are healthcare employees, live with elderly relatives, etc. and there is no reason in this scavenger hunt that we need to crowd each other.
  • Be SMART
    • All local, state, and federal laws continue to apply as usual, so follow them! In particular, DO NOT SPEED! As this is all low-distance, in-town driving with lots of stop signs and traffic lights, it wouldn't even really help you if you did, and you would be endangering yourself and others on the road, and risking all sorts of expensive and otherwise unpleasant legal consequences. I love the prizes, but seriously, they are worth a LOT less than a speeding ticket!

If everyone can do that, this could even become a fun annual thing that we can all enjoy and win prizes from! Prizes?!?
Yes!

Sioux City Family Scavenger Hunt Prizes

three pale green rectangles of cardstocks are marked as Sioux City Downtown Dollars

*This giveaway has now ended! Congratulations to Erin who won the prize for first to find and post all clues, and to Nick T. & Susan K. who were the winners of the random drawings!*

While the main point is just to get out and have fun exploring the city with your family, there are also prizes! Sioux City Downtown Partners was kind enough to provide three gift certificates for $20 each for the winners. The Downtown Dollars are usable at a wide variety of great downtown Sioux City businesses!

One gift certificate will be awarded to the first person or group to complete the entire scavenger hunt! If no one completes it all, this prize will go to the person or group who finds the most, with time serving as a tie-breaker.

The other two gift certificates will be given to people who are randomly drawn out of all participants. Every photo you share counts as one entry in the random prize drawing, so the more places you go, the higher your odds of winning, but even if you can only get one, you still have a chance!

I will announce winners on Facebook on Monday, May 25th, so be sure to follow the Siouxland Families Blog page. If you do not follow the page, I won't be able to tag you to let you know you won! If I don't hear back from winners within 24 hours of drawing names, I will redraw.

Siouxland Fourth of July Fireworks & Fun

Fourth of July falls on a Thursday in 2024 and there is lots of patriotic fun happening. Here's where you can catch fireworks and celebrate the USA this year:

Little Chicago Deli is coming back to Sioux City!

Sioux City's newest eatery isn't actually new--it's just the newest iteration of a classic! Little Chicago Deli is opening in a new location just a couple doors down from the original restaurant, and they're opening on Friday May 31, 2024, for pickup orders and delivery, with the dining lobby opening later in summer 2024. Here's the info we have so far on Sioux City's new Little Chicago Deli: History of Little Chicago Deli Little Chicago Deli has been around Sioux City since 1988 as a locally owned sandwich shop, but unfortunately the previous location closed in 2017. Prior to that, I remember going there in college while I was doing an internship downtown, and I was sad to hear the original closed. But new owners, including some staff from the old Little Chicago Deli, are bringing it back in 2024! The name pays homage to local legends about Sioux City during Prohibition. For starters, Prohibition was widely ignored in Sioux City
