This Saturday, August 12th is the 20th annual celebration of Adams Homestead and Nature Preserve's official opening in 1997 as a South Dakota State Park and to the public as a center of learning, nature, history, and fun. Steven Searls Adams and his family originally homesteaded the area in the 1870's, and his granddaughters donated the land to the State of South Dakota in the 1980's hoping it would be a place where children could learn about nature and where everyone could be refreshed. Since then it has beomes 1500 acres of exactly that.
in celebration, this Saturday from 8am to 4pm you can enjoy:
- Kids Games
- Pie Contest (bring pies by 10:30am to enter; judging will be held at 11:30am and will be based on appearance, texture, and taste)
- Threshing machine demo
- Corn shelling
- Candle making
- Tin punching
- Rope making
- Buffalo chip throwing
- Face painting
- Watermelon seed spitting
- Live Music
- Dutch oven cooking demos
- Food available for purchase
And one of the things my family is most excited for...the unveiling of the new playground structure! Barring unforseen delays due to weather etc, the new playground should be open. We got a sneak peek of what it is supposed to look like when its done and of the installation and can't wait to go play on it:
